Immersion Brush-up in and around Bristol

5-day programme consisting of a 3-day CLIL course in a language school with a lot of expertise in CLIL teaching, as well as teacher professional development. The course has three strands: 1. The exploitation of English language teaching methodologies to subject teaching in English in order to support the language needs of the secondary students and maximise their students’ communication; e.g. paraphrasing techniques, CCQs, extending word fields, introducing a new topic, eliciting vocabulary, etc. 2. Intensive English language tuition with a focus on speaking, writing and effective teacher communication. 3. The observation of subject teaching in a UK secondary school; you will spend one morning observing subject-specific classes at a leading Bristol independent school, followed by meetings with the college teachers to discuss their teaching. This will be followed by a 2-day excursion programme with carefully selected guides that will cater for the teachers’ historical, scientific, economic, geographic, technological, and political interests in the area of Bristol and South Wales: A visit to a Welsh coalmine and the Welsh National Coal Museum, a tour of the Welsh Parliament in Cardiff, a guided tour of street art in Bristol (Banksy), the Bristol Slave Trade Walk and a seminar on the Bristol Bus Boycott of 1963 and British Black History. In order to make the most of these three days, the participants will need to prepare for the course. You will be asked to complete a detailed “needs analysis questionnaire”, to reflect on the specific course theme and on your lesson planning. You will also be asked to send in lesson plans beforehand that will then be analysed and discussed. In a preparatory meeting, we will get to know each other and clarify organizational details (e.g., travel by train or plane). We expect total costs of about 1500.- per person (incl. travel). Lehrpersonen von privaten Mittelschulen, Pädagogischen Hochschulen und ausserkantonalen Schulen bezahlen eine Gebühr. Fr. 150. -- kostet ein kurzer Abendkurs (bis 3h); der erste Kurstag (1/2 oder 1 Tag) kostet Fr. 300.--, jeder weitere Tag Fr. 150.--. Die Kurskosten werden nachträglich in Rechnung gestellt.
